The collection originated in the 1990s by the Keystone Genealogical Society with their desire to collect resources about Jefferson County’s families. It expanded to include information on Jefferson County’s historic homes and businesses.

The collection was first housed in one of Monticello’s historical homes on Washington Street. It was later moved to the county’s public library in 2005.

The society no longer exists as an active group, though former society members staff the library as volunteers. They continue to operate and expand the library and its collection with the support of the Jefferson County Public Library, the Jefferson County Commission, and the Jefferson County Historical Association.

All volunteers are dedicated to preserving and protecting the genealogical and historical records of Jefferson County. They also stand ready to aid individuals searching for their North Florida and South Georgia ancestors. They can personally assist on Wednesdays or answer email queries from those unable to come in person.
